If being in foster care has taught fifteen-year-old Stryker Henderson anything, it’s not to get attached. Not to his newest foster parents, not to the kids who want him to join their art club, not to anyone. It might be lonely, but at least it’s safe.

But when his biological dad mysteriously calls him with the goal of reconnecting, he makes an exception. If his dad came back for him after this long, there’s no way he’d leave now. It’s the perfect middle ground between loving someone and protecting himself.

However, the more time he spends with his dad, foster parents, and club members, the more confused he becomes. When he’s betrayed by someone close to him, he must decide whether to face his fear of connection or hold on to a misconstrued version of safety.
